Learn More: Washington, D.C.’s Library of Congress is the national library of the United States and the largest in the world. With more than 167 million items as of 2018, the library reportedly grows at a rate of two million items each year. While the library, itself, is free and open to the public, those who do not live in the nation’s capital can still have access to its electronic resources online at its official site. However, if you’re a book nerd, a visit to the Jefferson Building, built in 1897, is worth the trip just for the rows upon rows of books and that amazing book smell. And of course, while in the area, you can also see the White House, explore the Smithsonian museums, and tour Capitol Hill and the National Mall
