Updated: Mar 4, 2021

Jacqui Cooper (Talk Show Host - JCooperTravels) speaks with Mayor Rachelle Arizmendi, Mayor of Sierra Madre & Vice-President/COO at PACE about her trips. She shares travel tips on how to travel to Croatia, Peru, Asia, Columbia, Portugal. She shares her stories about her trip to Macha Picchu and other well known locations. She provides 8 tips on how to pack for her treks and excursions.

Rachelle Arizmendi is the Mayor of Sierra Madre (California). Sierra Madre is a city in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley below the southern edge of the Angeles National Forest. Pasadena and Altadena are to its west, with Arcadia to its south and east. Sierra Madre is known as "Wisteria City", and its city seal is decorated with a drawing of the now widely known 500-foot (150 m) vine. It is also called the "Village of the Foothills" and was an All-America City in 2007.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is both a cultural and natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. Since its discovery in 1911, growing numbers of tourists have visited the site each year, with numbers exceeding 1.4 million in 2017. As Peru's most visited tourist attraction and major revenue generator, it is continually exposed to economic and commercial forces. In the late 1990s, the Peruvian government granted concessions to allow the construction of a cable car and a luxury hotel, including a tourist complex with boutiques and restaurants and a bridge to the site. Many people protested the plans, including Peruvians and foreign scientists, saying that more visitors would pose a physical burden on the ruins. In 2018, plans were restarted to again construct a cable car to encourage Peruvians to visit Machu Picchu and boost domestic tourism. A no-fly zone exists above the area. UNESCO is considering putting Machu Picchu on its List of World Heritage in Danger.

Azores

There are nine major Azorean islands and an islet cluster, in three main groups. These are Flores and Corvo, to the west; Graciosa, Terceira, São Jorge, Pico, and Faial in the centre; and São Miguel, Santa Maria, and the Formigas Reef to the east. They extend for more than 600 km (370 mi) and lie in a northwest–southeast direction.

Azoreans have developed their own distinct regional identity and cultural traits, from a combination of continental Portuguese customs brought by various waves of immigration and local political and environmental factors.

Religious festivals, patron saints and traditional holidays mark the Azorean calendar. The most important religious events are tied with the festivals associated with the cult of the Holy Spirit, commonly referred to as the festivals of the Holy Spirit (or Espírito Santo), rooted in millenarian dogma and held on all islands from May to September. These festivals are very important to the Azorean people, who are primarily Roman Catholic, and combine religious rituals with processions celebrating the benevolence and egalitarianism of neighbors

Cartagena, Columbia

Founded in 1533 on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Cartagena de Indias was the first Spanish colony on the American continent. As the Spanish pillaged riches from Amerindian nations, including the Incas, the port of Cartagena became a hub for shipping the stolen cargos back to Spain.

To help defend the city from attack, massive fortifications were built by the Spanish around Cartagena. The areas within these walls are now known as the Ciudad Amurallada (walled city), Centro Historico (Historic Center), Corralito de Piedra (playpen of stone), or most simply, Ciudad Vieja (old city).

There are four separate districts including the Downtown or Centro, San Diego, Matuna, and Getsemani. Each district has its own look and feel and the areas’ historic residents can often be identified by closely observing the buildings’ doors.

Croatia & Game of Thrones....

HBO's hit fantasy series, Game of Thrones, used the Croatian city of Dubrovnik as the setting for its majority. In Dubrovnik, you can see the Red Keep, the House of the Undying, the setting of the Purple Wedding, and much more.
